A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key that verifies the identity of the holder, issued by an Authority. It typically contains your identity. Digital Certificates use Public Key that is data has been digitally signed or encrypted by a private key can only be decrypted by its corresponding public key. A Digital Certificate is an electronic way or electronic "credit card" that establishes your credentials when doing business or other transactions on the Web.

Certifying Authority (CA) means a person who has been authority to issue a digital signature certificate under Section 24 of the Indian IT-Act 2000.

Class-2 or class-3 DSC is used for filing return that is e-filing. Certifying authority is issued the DSC.
The cost of obtaining a digital signature certificate may vary as there are many entities issuing DSC. The approximate cost could vary between ₹ 2000 to ₹ 3000 depending on the number of years for which it is issued.
The CAare authorized to issue a DSC with a validity of one or two years. The maximum period for which the DSC is issued is only two years. On the expiry of the term, the Digital Signature Certificate can be revalidated by paying the fees again.
